AUCTION FOCUS ON BANKNOTE AND FOUNTAIN PEN COLLECTIONS

 FEBRUARY 17, 2012

Huge pre-sale interest is being generated in collections of banknotes and fountain pens, which are to be sold at a leading Shropshire fine art auction house next week.

The collections will go under the hammer at Halls’ popular collective auction at the Welsh Bridge saleroom in Shrewsbury on Wednesday, February 22.

Potential stars of the banknote collection, which is expected to fetch around £2,500, are a Bank of England white £100 note dated 1936 and a 1697 Exchequer bill entitling the bearer to £5 with interest of a farthing a day. They are each valued at up to £800.

The banknotes were bought by a Shropshire investor as an investment in the 1980s, together with a £1,500 collection of British Commonwealth stamps from 1930s to the ‘50s, which is also included in the auction.

Also attracting great interest from collectors across the UK is a collection of 44 fountain pens and one propelling pencil by Conway Stewart from the 1950s and ‘60s. Valued at around £300, the collection is believed to have been the stock belonging to a travelling salesman, as many of pens still bear their original prices.

The auction will also include a liftetime’s collection of decorative hat pins and hatpin holders from an elderly Shrewsbury collector. The collection will sold in four lots, with estimates ranging from £30 to £60.

In the silver section, an interesting Victorian silver military whistle is expected to fetch around £350 while an extensive 18-setting canteen of silver plated cutlery is valued at up to £450.

Certain to attract attention in the watches section are two lady’s nine carat gold Rolex wristwatches at up to £600 and a George III silver pair cased verge pocket watch, which is expected to sell for in excess of £150.

Potential stars of the ceramics section are a Chinese porcelain mallet shaped vase at up to £600 and a Samson porcelain Wucai baluster vase and cover at up to £300.

The furniture section features a mahogany tri-pillar dining table and a 20th century set of 12 mahogany George I style dining chairs. Each lot is valued at up to £3,500.

A new addition to the auction is a textiles section with a collection of Victorian clothing, fur coats, tapestries and silk and embroidery panels.

The books section includes the auction catalogue of the Lilleshall Estate, Wellington in 1912, which is valued at up to £150.

The paintings section features a good selection of oils, watercolours and prints to suit all budgets. Expected to sell well are three marine watercolours by Aubrey Ramus, Charles Hannaford Junior and M. Rolph, which are each valued at up to £150.

A collection of 10 lithographs and prints by Sir Frank Brangwyn, some of which are signed in pencil, and an oil on canvas of a mountainous coastline by South African artist Michael Aubertyn are each valued at around £300.

The saleroom will be open for viewing on Monday from 9.30am to 8p,Tuesday from 9.30am to 4.30pm and on the morning of the auction. The lots can also be viewed online at www.the-saleroom.com/halls.
