Bill Higgins Cup Winning Heifer Sells for £2,150

November 16, 2011

Halls reported a “hot” trade from start to finish at the annual dairy show and sale in memory of the late Bill Higgins at Shrewsbury Auction Centre yesterday (Tuesday).

Alan Morris of Pen-y-bont, Oswestry won the silverware with a heifer that sols for £2,150 to Anthony Mathews of Whitchurch. Reserve champion was a Pickthorn heifer by Bo Irish Lead Ready from Martin Jones of Astley, Shrewsbury, which sold at £2,080.

A red and white heifer from the Brassington family of Roden, Shrewsbury (Cracking) by Sterndale Rose Royce Red out of a September Storm dam also sold for £2,080.

The cup was first presented in 1996 by the family of the late Mr Bill Higgins, a renowned dairy farmer from South Shropshire.

“Trade was hot from start to finish, perhaps more so on second quality cattle,” reported Halls’ dairy specialist David Giles, chairman of Shrewsbury Auction Centre. “As usual, there were more buyers than cattle available around the ring, which still augurs well for the future.”
