Dendor Herefords do it Again at the Biggest Display of Herefords in Europe!

December 19, 2011

The largest single display of Hereford cattle in Europe was attracted to Shrewsbury Auction Centre for the Annual Christmas Calf Show, which this year incorporated the National Calf Show.

The Hereford Cattle Society’s show, which featured 110 calves, had an international feel with several Danish Hereford breeders attending to support judge, Anders Mortensen, of Woodlands Herefords, the oldest herd in Denmark, established in 1966. A group of breeders from the Republic of Ireland added to the event’s international flavour.

Breed stalwarts D. E., E. D. and A. L. Jones, Dendor Herefords, Caersws, Powys won the supreme championship for the second year in a row with heifer champion, Dendor 1 Greta.

Fourteen-month-old "Greta", by Maxstoke 1 Yeoman and out of Dendor 1 Greta 8th, held off a strong class of heifers before going on to take the championship. The Jones family also collected the reserve male championship with eight-month-old Dendor 1 Harinordoquy, sired by Hawkesbury 1 Prosper and out of former Poll Female of the Year, Dendor 1 Ruby 4th.

The reserve supreme championship went to Shraden 1 Henson from local breeders and great advocates of the show M. J. and H. M. Timmis, Baschurch, Shropshire. Twelve-month-old "Henson", by Bosa 1 Ashley and out of Shraden 1 Duchess B186, had earlier in the day taken the male championship.

M. J. and H. M. Timmis also took first prize in the commercial heifer or steer by a registered Hereford sire. Second was T. D. Livesey with Normanton 1 Haslet, sired by the current Hereford Bull of the Year, Normanton 1 Eastern Promise.

The reserve heifer champion was nine-month-old Lowesmoor 1 Curly 759 from M. J. Clark, Tetbury, Gloucestershire. "Curly" is by Udel 1 BC Bluechip bred by David Carroll of Udel Herefords, Wexford, Ireland.

Other show successes included E. L. Lewis, who took the sires group of three with calves sired by Mawarra Vice Admiral (semen) imported from Australia. In the best pair of bull calves owned by the exhibitor, it was an all Herefordshire affair with well known breeders R. A. Bradstock and Partners, G. Blandford and Son and E. L. Lewis and Son taking first, second and third respectively.

In the corresponding heifer class, it was Nicholas and Heath who triumphed, with G. Blandford again taking second place and D. E., E. D. and A. L. Jones taking third spot.

Shrewsbury Auction Centre manager Nick Hyne, from auctioneers Halls, said the company was delighted to host the show, which was now established as one of the major events in the Hereford breed calendar.

“We are looking forward to hosting an auction of high quality Hereford cattle for the Hereford Cattle Society on May 22, 2012, following the success of the inaugural sale in Shrewsbury in 2011,” he added.
