Crane Raises the Roof at Bishops Castle Development
November 11, 2011
A giant crane raised the roof at an award-winning development of energy-efficient houses in the Shropshire border market town of Bishops Castle today (Friday).
Since Fairmist Homes, a branch of highly respected Cavendish & Gloucester plc, took over The Wintles earlier this year, the company has been keen to listen to the views of townspeople and local councils about the development.
A number of issues have been resolved amicably, the last of which is the height of Tower House, a four-storey home with a circular turret. As the previous developer had built the house higher than permitted, Peter Murphy, chairman of Fairmist Homes, has agreed to reduce the height by 2.4 metres.
The crane removed the roof from Tower House for the turret walls to be lowered before the roof was replaced.
“Having spoken to local people, one of their comments was that Tower House could be seen from all parts of the town sticking up from The Wintles,” said Mr Murphy. “The actions of the previous developer seem to have upset a lot of local people, including some neighbours.
“Houses have to be built in accordance with planning requirements and reducing the height of Tower House is the only remaining issue that we have inherited.
“The Wintles development is unique in the UK. It has been transformed into a delightful place to live and people enjoy the lifestyle that goes with it. I didn’t believe the special community spirit there until I saw it for myself.
“The existing owners are of mixed ages and occupations and they have come together as a residents association to share 13-acres of land to grow food and keep animals. They also play an active part in the life of Bishops Castle. For the right person, The Wintles is paradise.”
The company has three homes for sale and ready to move into at The Wintles, ranging from three to five bedrooms, with prices starting at £324,950 rising to £449,950. The houses are being marketed by estate agents Halls.
The design philosophy for The Wintles is centred on energy-efficiency
and sustainability. The houses, each with its own character features, have been built using a combination of high tech building methods and beautiful, natural materials.
